A shop that has decided to deliver

Spotlight Furnishings is a furnishings shop in Srinagar. Everything we have sold, we have sold across a counter, with the carpet unrolled on the floor between us and the customer. That part is not changing.

What is changing is that you no longer have to be standing in the shop to buy from it. We deliver anywhere in Srinagar now, and you pay the person who hands it to you.

What we keep

Carpets, mostly. Irani, Turkish and Arabic, bought one at a time rather than ordered by the container. We turn each one over and look at the knots before we agree a price, because the back of a carpet tells you what the front is hiding.

Alongside them: curtains, doormats, rugs and runners, and the bedding that gets a family through a Kashmiri winter. Quilts, comforters, blankets, bedsheets, pillow covers.

What we will not do

We will not tell you a machine-made carpet is hand knotted. We will not photograph something in flattering light and send you a duller one. If a piece is wrong when it reaches you, say so within seven days and we will collect it.

That is the whole promise. Judge us on the carpet when it arrives and on what we do if it is not right.
